About Us

Butler Historical Preservation Society

      The Butler Historical Preservation Society is an organization dedicated to the preservation of the history of Butler, NY. We are a non-profit 501 c3 organization and all donations are tax-deductible. Our current projects include the restoration of the Butler Church Museum and of the Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse.

Butler Church Museum

Butler Church Museum

      Built in 1836 by the Methodist Episcopal Congregation, this is the oldest known Methodist Church in Wayne County, NY. The church operated continually until the 1960's when declining membership and funds forced its closure. The church, now home to the Butler Church Museum, is on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places.

Roe Schoolhouse

Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse

      The Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse is a historic one room school located in Butler, NY. Built by Daniel Roe in the 1820's, it is believed to be the oldest cobblestone schoolhouse in North America. The schoolhouse is on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places.
